Back and neck massager buying guide
By Ostrall · Updated October 18, 2026
"Back and neck massager" covers several quite different devices. Ostrall works out which kind you mean, then shows the ones that fit.
What Ostrall asks to narrow it down
- Which kind: wrap, pillow, seat pad, massage gun, or TENS?
- Heat, or no heat?
- Corded, or cordless?
The main types
- Shiatsu neck and shoulder wraps sit around the neck with arm loops for pressure. Rotating nodes knead; many add heat.
- Shiatsu pillows are smaller and sit behind the neck or lower back, against a chair or bed.
- Seat pads and chair cushions cover the whole back, usually with rolling or vibrating motors.
- Massage guns (percussion) are strong and targeted, with a hard head.
- TENS and EMS units use small electrical pulses through stick-on pads, a different kind of device from a mechanical massager.
Heat and timers
Many models add heat, and most have an automatic shut-off timer, often around 15 minutes.
Power and portability
Corded models never run flat; cordless ones go anywhere and list a run time per charge. Some wraps and cushions include a car adapter.
Pressure and fit
Wraps with arm loops let you set the intensity, and many have a reverse-direction button and several speeds. Massage guns differ mostly in the number of heads and the speed range. Removable, washable covers are common on everyday models.
